What size FASS Fuel System do I actually need?!

How to pick out a FASS Diesel Fuel System

One of the most common questions we get here at FASS is:

“What size fuel system do I need for my truck?”

If you’re not familiar with diesel fuel systems, don’t worry—we’ll explain sizing right now. By “size”, we’re referring to a fuel system’s flow rate—which is measured in Gallons Per Hour (GPH).

Flow rate or GPH simply refers to how much fuel a System can deliver to the engine. Most stock or lightly modified diesel pickup trucks won’t require more than a 100GPH or 140GPH Fuel System to keep their injection system and engine properly fed.

For commercial diesel trucks with PACCAR, Cummins, or CAT engines (among others) 165GPH or even 290GPH Fuel Systems are regularly used. These higher-flow systems are designed for larger displacement and/or higher horsepower trucks.

However, the right GPH Fuel System for your diesel truck can change drastically if you start making performance modifications. Larger injectors and custom tuning are the two most common reasons for moving to a higher GPH Fuel System.

This is why it’s important to know if your truck has been modified, and if you plan on modifying it, before upgrading your Fuel System.

How to decide which FASS Fuel System is right for your truck:

Every FASS Fuel System covers a horsepower range. Meaning, a 100GPH FASS Fuel System, such as our TSC10100G for the LBZ Duramax, is designed for stock trucks, but flows more than enough fuel for up to 600hp.

This is why we offer the TSC10100G for “Stock to 600hp” LBZ-powered trucks.

So, in this example, if you had a bone-stock GMC Sierra with the LBZ Duramax, our TSC10100G would be the ideal choice—whether you plan to keep it stock, or add some bolt-on performance upgrades later on.

However, let’s say you have plans to push your engine (an LBZ Duramax in this example) well beyond that 600hp mark—or perhaps it’s already there. In that case, you can move up to a:

  • 165GPH Fuel System (TSC10165G), 600hp-1,000hp
  • 250GPH Fuel System (TSC10250G), 900hp-1,200hp
  • 290GPH Fuel System (TSC10290G), 1,200hp-1,500hp

No matter which GPH rating is right for your truck, all of our Titanium Signature and Industrial Series Fuel Systems provide the same industry-leading filtration we’re known for. If you’re not familiar, FASS Filtration:

  • Eliminates over 99% of the water found in diesel fuel (3rd party verified)
  • Removes entrained air and vapor from diesel fuel
  • Filters debris down to 2 Microns absolute
  • Acts as a fail-safe in the event of extreme fuel contamination

Simply removing the water, air, and debris from your fuel has some pretty impressive benefits, including:

  • 3x increase in injection component life
  • Optimized MPG (results will vary)
  • Restored horsepower
  • Sharpened throttle response
  • Reduced regens on DPF-equipped trucks
  • Reduced soot output
  • And more!

Can I install a higher-flow Fuel System than I currently need, if I have performance modifications planned?

Believe it or not, you can install ANY size FASS Fuel System on a stock truck! Any unused fuel will simply be cleaned and returned to the fuel tank—an effect we call “Fuel Polishing”.

However, keep in mind that with higher flow rate Fuel Systems, such as a 220GPH or 290GPH System, you will have more noise. This is not typically an issue on modified trucks as they’re loud already, but a 290GPH Fuel System on a stock Duramax, Cummins, or Powerstroke truck can be quite noticeable from a noise perspective.

This is why we typically recommend buying a Fuel System that’s appropriately sized for your current power level. Unless you will need the added fuel flow, there’s no benefit to buying a more aggressive Fuel System.

Can I upgrade to a higher-flow FASS Fuel System later on?

In short, yes! With almost any truck, upgrading to a higher GPH FASS Fuel System is very straightforward. To get started, call our service team at (636) 433-5410, or shoot them an email at techsupport@fassride.com.

Our highly trained fuel system experts will help you identify the right flow rate for your needs, and which parts are needed to upgrade your existing FASS Fuel System. If you’re unsure which FASS Fuel System is currently on your truck, they can help with that too!

More clean diesel fuel, less confusion!
